IRO
(International Refugee Organization)

In July 1947 the IRO took over the camp. This organization, founded on 15 Dec 1946 tried to arrange movements of bachelors or whole families to countries within Europe as well as Overseas. By 31 March 1952 the IRO succeeded in moving all 15000 DPs from camp Wildflecken to new countries.

Ab Juli 1947 übernahm die Flüchtlingsorganisation der Vereinten Nationen, die IRO, das Truppenlager. Diese Organisation, die am 15. Dezember 1946 gegründet wurde, versuchte Einzelpersonen sowie ganze Familien in die Länder Europas sowie Übersee zu vermitteln. Bis zum 31. März 1952 gelang es der IRO allen 15000 im Lager Wildflecken befindlichen DPs eine neue Heimat und eine Existenz zu vermitteln.

Described in Kathryn Hulme`s book "The Wild Place" are cirteria of each single country accepting DPs. Only those, whose head of household could provide proof of a handicraft skill received permission to enter the country.

Kathryn Hulme beschreibt in Ihrem Buch "The Wild Place" verschiedene Kriterien der einzelnen Aufnahmeländer. So konnten nur diejenigen einreisen, falls das Familienoberhaupt einen handwerklichen Beruf nachweisen konnte.

Within the camp there were some shops (i. e. metal shop).

Other countries only accepted couples without children, others one or two at the maximum, others only singles, or with a certain age limit. Countries accepting DPs/refugees were: Brasil, Chile, Venezuela, USA, Canada, Australia, as well as European countries, like Great Britain, France and Belgium

Innerhalb des Truppenlagers befanden sich auch die eine oder andere Werkstatt (z. B. Schlosserei).

Andere Länder akzeptierten nur kinderlose Ehepaare, oder max. mit 1 oder 2 Kindern, andere wiederum nur Einzelpersonen oder mit einer Altersbegrenzung. Aufnahmeländer waren Brasilien, Chile, Venezuela, USA, Kanada, Australien, aber auch europäische Länder wie Großbritannien, Frankreich und Belgien.
