I was so happy to come across this site today and wish to thank the webmaster for putting it together. I look back and nothing but the fond memories are what I can remember and seeing old friends that I have lost contact with that have logged on and I look forward to getting in touch with all of you. The friends, experiances and memories are to be cherished for my lifetime. Driving the bucket loader up the hill to the quarry by the hawk missles to work or just maintaning the roads out on the training area. Adventures to the Kreuzberg or skateboarding down that hill with Kelso when the time came. Going to have dinner at the Arms room for the best cordon blue that I had ever had. Partying with Jurgen at the Zwei Tannen and having the good fate of life to meet my wife of 23 years Helene. I hope that those of that I have lost contact with are able to get back in touch. Pat,Vic,Sgt.Z and Woody I look forward to getting in touch with all.

Ihad the great misfortune to visit WILDFLACKEN, as my ole 1st soldier called it,many times to fire our 4.2 mortars. Two things I remember, first you could stand knee deep in a mud puddle and get dust in your eyes and the on going wars with the 50th Inf. at the EM club. What a ball!!!

I remember going to the rock. There were probably 300 + that went at one time. We all took basic at Ft.Rucker Ala.and AIT and all of us went to Wildflecken . I can remember 1SGT Kuhni, CO Lt. Cooper, Sgt Holts and a Sgt Matts. When he retired I took his place as the Company Training NCO. I can remember Danny LaGarce (company clerk) Tom Bishop (arms room) Otto Hartman (Colonels Driver)and (man most likely to get demoted every week) Chief (never could handle the fire water)Roger Rogers, Little Moe,and I could keep going. Enjoyed my tour of duty, it was beautiful country and gooooooood beer.

My first overseas duty station. It reminded me then (and still does) of Greenbrier County, West Virginia. I was the lab tech for the 23rd Med Det. we lived above the dispensary on the road up from the main gate. Does anybody still remember the Femina (sp?) bar downtown, and the Stadt Cafe where the medics and the MPs drank.

I remember the walk over the hill to the Kreuzberg monastary for the beer and homemade cheese & bread. And the little personenzug that went down to Gemunden where you caught the main line DB trains to go to Frankfurt and beyond.

After I returned to the land of the round doorknob, I went to college, then got a job with the Navy as a logistician, putting together computer systems on ships [retired in 1997] I also joined the Naval Reserve, retiring from the 4th Medical Bn, USMCR as a Senior Chief Hospital Corpsman (Fleet Marine Force) after we came back from Desert Storm.

Am now the Rector of St. Paul's Church in Lexington VA.

Married Anita Rossbach from Bad Neustadt/S April 1978. Visited Wildflecken 1989 and 1995. Sure do miss the good times there and at the Kreuzberg and alll the other little towns around there. I was one of the new charter members in 1976 that attempted to restart Kontakt on post (remember the bicenntenial?). A lot of money was pumped into PR that year. That is how I met my future wife and a lot of other great German friends and to this day still have a great time communicating with them through letters, phone calls, and of course visiting with them when I get to Germany (like last April '01)

Just surfed on over to this nice site and was suprised to see Nick Cassotis had posted a message. I am so glad that my first duty station was there in the Chicken up on the Rock. Miss the Zwei Tannen, the Sintal Club, Ostheim, and of course the Green Goose!!!! Never forget the gawdawful winters there. Lost touch with several people over the years...Paul Jones, Armstead Kennedy Fisher, Jose "Cey Carew" Morales, David Lugdon, Stephen Williams, Vernon Cooper, and all the others. Went back in 1996 when I was stationed in Wurzburg (67th Combat support Hospital) and boy was I suprised at how the place looked. Would love to hear from those who were there. Later!!

All we can say is WOW!!!!!! Wildflecken shall forever be in our memories and today we were able to show our kids pictures of where we met and married.
So many memories so many friends. Where has the time gone. Where are all the old friends. Where to start guess it might be best to just tell it.
He arrived Christmas Eve of Dec 75 and she arrived Dec of 76. Met in June 77. Was married downtown by the Burgermeister, under German law, after 2 months of getting permission from everyone the Pentagon, Seventh Army the German goverment plus our oldest daughter was born in Wurzberg. Almost 24 married years and 20 years in the military and Wildflecken is still our fondest memories together.
Wish we could remember everyone we knew but only a few come to mind Steve and Trixie Wright, Ann Grabowski, Pam and Robert Hughes, JoAnn Boyd, SSG James, Col Ball(The soldiers Soldier), the wild german national crew that ran the Range Warehouse (wish we could remember all their names), Everyone from the Rod and Gun club, the list goes on and on.
We hope to one day return with our oldest daughter and visit a land we love as much as we love America.

Looking for any of my friends that I served with on "The Rock" during the period of 1972 through to the end of 1974. I routinely review this site, and very rarely do I see any entries made by anyone who served during that period. Maybe they are trying to forget the race riots, the loneliness, the cold, etc. Although most of my memories of my time at Wildflecken are good ones, the good memories are due to the friends that I had, being in a wonderful country, disco's like "The Titanic" and just being young.
The bad things about "The Rock" were; you were really stuck unless you had a car (or unless you wanted to pay beaucoup Marks for a taxi to get out away from the post), the VERY POOR QUALITY of NCO's in most of the units (These guys would make the hillbillies on "Deliverance" look like Einstein) and the fact that you had very few options. If you had a crummy boss, you were stuck unless he rotated out (yes, I said "he", because we didn't have any "she's" on the post back then unless they were dependents or comrads. The race relations were undoubtedly the worst. Guys that would normally be friends "in the world" hated each other on "The Rock". Wonder why that was?

Hi to all the good people that got to experiance the ROCK. I know some think that this place was true hell, but to me it was way to cool. All ya had to do was get off that hill and have the time of your life. I ran the supply room along w/the arms room. Nice job at times, other times wasnt. Like during alerts. (we all remember those)Lived off post in Gersfeld, right next to the big church. Cant wait to go back for a visit.

Incredible time at the rock! This was unfortunately the bitter end of my career due to my party attitude and going wild with the freedom of the area, but, life has been great since. I have incredible memories (somehow through the inebriated fog....lol) and hope all I served with are doing well.

Trying to get any information on Andreas Kleinheinz who was killed in action 20 April 1944. His wife Sabine went to the US in 1966. They had 3 girls. Friedel Grace went to the US. Lenchen went to Straubing, Germany. The 3rd girl was Margarete. Any help anyone can provide on these possible distant relatives of mine would be greatly appreciated. There is another post earlier about another Andreas Kleinheinz who passed away in 1924 I was told. I think I am related to the 1924 Kleinheinz, and not this 1944 Kleinheinz but I don't know...Any help anyone can provide on ANY Kleinheinz in Wildflecken today would be great. I think we are close to establishing a link!!!!!

I was in the mechanized infantry. We used the M-59 APC, which, thank God

My friend Walter Koempel sent me a black and white picture of this bildstock recently. I was wondering if anyone had a color picture of it? It has about 19 German words on it. I was able to translate parts of it, but some of it was lost in the translation. I was hoping someone over there was familiar with this bildstock, and can possibly give me anymore pictures/information on it. I appreciate any help anyone can/will be. Thank you in advance. This will be brief for now

The attacks on the wtc are the work of those who have learned to undo the ability of democracy at its heart in other areas around the world. We who live in the united states will show others how to look terror in the face and give that terror its very own sense of fear. A fear unlike any fear that it has known or shall ever know again. A fear so deep and so raw the people of those responsible shall feel this burning in their bones until the end of time. Yes WTA,we can give this ability to every soldier. This is only the voice of one. Look out world, we're going to tear someone's playhouse down.

Hi Guys and Gals!! I am Back in Germany! Left when WFL was closing down in 1993, went to work for the AF in Texas (Sheppard AFB) Kept applying for any and every job possible until they finally picked me up as a (you guessed it!) theatre director here in Germany in Nov. of 1999. Have run into a few of the old WFL gang here.. But some are gone forever.. and some have just dissapeared.. others, I suspect, are keeping a low profile...I missed the reunion because I was busy trying to get my butt back over here.. If anyone remembers me, GET IN TOUCH!! I have a kick ass house in the Odenwald and room for guests.. This is a dream place.. and totally private.. The view is to die for.. I am on the side of a small mountain.. I can see all the way down the valley to Frankfurt.. I am so glad I got to come back again before I retire. I am having loads of fun here now. (I have the love of my life with me!) but I have to say, it's hard to compare the old days in Wildflecken.. that was Camelot in many ways.. Lot's of special folks.. and I KNOW you are out there somewhere!! E-mail me now.. or I'll sic a garden gnome on ya!!!

I had been a Missionary from the Church of Jesus Christ of latter Day Saints (the Mormons), serving in Fulda on post with the 11th ACR. We also worked at Wildflecken and had the most wonderful Christmas I had ever experianced.
Unfortunately I lost contact to some of my friends from this time and I hope that somebody knows them:
The Drivers (He was a cook)
The Ackermans (Mr. Ackerman was serving for the MP)
Gary West
The Dunhams
If somebody knows them, please mail to me. I would love to see them again !!!

I have great memories of "The Rock". Does anyone remember the transfer to Darmstadt? Anyone heard from Joe Garnhart? That guy was my tour guide to Germany. I can't remember the name of the monestary where I could only drink 1 maybe 2 steins of beer made by the monks. I would love to hear from old friends and anyone that knows the name of that Monestary where the worlds strongest beer is made. I have plans to return in 2002.

Weather was always a challenge, if you didn't like it, wait a few hours
it would change. Leaving the comfort

O/c we managed to survive to
reminisce how great it was as older

Anyone remember when Fonzie was flown in at the Middle School? Wildflecken was a GREAT place to grow up.
I'd love to hear from anyone who remembers the Talent Shows and ballet practice!
What about the Rod and Gun Club's famous BBQ chicken? :)
My sister and I went back Summer '00 and met some wonderful people--
esp. the new librarian. There are some interesting new developments, lots of
new Russian families being resettled in Wildflecken. Call me if you lived on "A" street and remember the
barbed wire of the border in our "backyard". My mom was the reading specialist at the Middle School up on the hill.

Odd thoughts while wondering who drank mein eine pils. Good times, largely unappreciated then. We came through Monterey or San Francisco, Goodfellow and Devens, enjoying our atypical experience all along the way. Once on the hill we sought our own versions of refuge from the mundane green deluge, at least we had distractions in the Old World.

Liam, Paul, Cleve and Lars - we tried not to hang around, we were out that door, on the road gunning for the Buddha! Too many road trips for anyone's good - the Pub, Heidelberg (Paul, did we almost die one night with those Irish girls?), Meissner/Eschwege, Waldkappel & Ostheim [dancing un-American with Kims (Bassinger) One and Two]. Crumb & Sonja for the use of your crib, Scott, Angy ("what brilliant colors"), Kurt a/k/a Sweet Sister 'Rea. Sarah, the little sister who grew up. Nick & Brenda, sorry is all that I can say. Turkey, Tilkey and TacJam, 15 MPH on the 'bahn pissing off Petr. Other than waist-deep snow, diesel fumes, ear-shattering generators, putrid food, masochisticly cold razor blades and hours on the 'phones listening to Raygun's "Evil Empire", does anyone remember the exercises or were they just uneventful interruptions in our lives abroad?

Ho, Bce taku, would I go back? Yea, if these and many others not mentioned re-occurred.

Kate and I have been married since '89, with two cloned kids, one each.

Someone should start a similar site for DLI. It may have been only a year, but it was one to remember!

Hey Buffalo Soldiers, we hated to see you go. All you cunning linguists out there, intercepters, jammers, humint, sigint, Nonint and otherwise dysfunctional spooks that the MP's are still looking for, Salutations!!! I wonder where everyone went to, except for Kearney. Rapelling out the windows on lockdown to sneak down for a little of the shhh and the bad. Life is better knowing that I won't have to drive a jeep down a ski trail and sit with the damned thing for 2 days while the Old Man sits at home. Cpt. Maskavitch, thank your wife again for the cookies. Reforgers, umpires, roll outs, roll ups, charlie foxes and The keller bar. Dancing on the tables after a fifth of Stroh rum. By the way guys, I married that girl and have been married to her for 16 years. Major Regan, I remember you and did consider it an honor to serve with you. First IG we ever passed. And by the way, that fine NCO that tried to steal my fart sack on forge. I still remember. Thanks to the fellows who held my hand and watched my back. O'Connell, bite me. Lost some really good friends, I miss them. The original LRSD's you know who you are. The ASP raids and the night crossings. If your tent was ever brought down in tent city, you are welcome. I bet they're still alive and kickin in Wildchicken. I can still hear SILVER WINGS

Greetings all! I was originally stationed in Wildflecken with the 54th Engineer Battalion in 1986. Following my discharge, I took a civilian position as Regimental Illustrator at Headquarters, 11th ACR in Fulda. Visiting this site brings back many wonderful memories of my friends at the Entertainment Division in Wildflecken including Ellen Shepard, Harold and Mia Yoepp, Lonnie, Simon, D'Ann, and the rest of 11th Hour Theater Company.

I did manage to get back to Wildflecken several years ago for the supposed 'Reunion', but no such reunion occured. I had a great time visiting just the same.

Warm Wishes and Bright Blessings to one and all. Drop me a line sometime!

Actually it was my dad who was stationed on the Rock. We got there just before Thanksgiving and lived in a beautiful apartment outside of Wildflecken in Bishofsheim. Our landlords (and great friends) were Gerta and Gunter Bauer (sp??) I did 8th Grade at the school in Wildflecken and then 9 -11th in Wurzburg where we were sent by bus everyday -- yes, it was a heck of a long drive rain or snow. Sometimes we would get to school to find it had been closed due to snow. Go figure that one out.

Favorite hangout was the DYA and the library. I used to put in extra credit time at the library and during the summer -- to keep me out of trouble. And then there was the news stand run by another McGhee family. They were true "lifers" on the Rock. My folks were active at the Rod & Gun Club and like many had a CB Radio in the house and car.
For those of you there at the same time and listening in dad was the Virginia Grasshopper.

I would love to hear from anyone on the Rock at that time or even in Wurzburg at that time. Those were some very memorable times for me and my family.

Commanded by Col. Joffre Boston, Taskforce 28 (1st B.G., 28th Inf. [reinforced]), of the Big Red One, trained in and around Wildflecken the winter of 1963, during Operation Longthrust VI. After 3 months of Wildflecken snow & mud, TF 28 earned a "superior" ATT rating and moved into Berlin as an augmenting unit. Wildflecken gave soldiers of this Stateside unit an opportunity to interact with Bundeswehr soldiers and to participate in exercises with U.S. combat units of the 7th Army. Wildflecken was an excellent experience for a bunch of guys from Ft. Riley, Kansas!

I was a pac clerk for 1/68. Looks like WTA has changed alot since I was there. Funny how you can hate a place and cant wait to leave, but 10 years later miss it and wish you had enjoyed it more. Thanks for the memories.

The Wildflecken experience was challenging and if it wasn't for the great people I met there it would have been miserable. The entertainment options were pretty limited and the amount of single girls in and around Wildflecken were low enough to constitute cruel and unusual punishment. Fortunately there was plenty to drink...

WFL was a great place to live and work. I truely enjoyed my assignment there. I enjoyed the German friendships I developed espeically in the village I lived in, Schonau a.d. Brend. After moving on to K-Town in 92, I visited the area serveral times over the next 7 years. Every time I drove by the installation, it brought back fond memories. I visited this website first in about 1998 and learned about the reunion (475th birthday for Wildflecken). My wife, Barbara, and I attended the reunion in I think June or July 1999. We enjoyed it immensely and want to return for the next 5 year reunion. We hope there will be something on the website. Anxious to hear from any former Co D 3rd ARB, 50th Inf folks. I know there are two in the guestbook - Armand Du Bois and Paul T. Swartz. If you see this, drop me an e mail. I intend to do the same. I was 14/15 and went to wildflecken elementary school for half my 8th grade year and I went to Fulda High School in for my 9th & 10th grade years. I ended up meeting the father of my son when we ran into each other in Tacoma, WA. He (Travis Andersen) told me -when he came over to my friends house- that I was best friends with his sisters Cherymie & Chandra in Fulda. I went out with his best friend Chuck in Fulda. We had roamed the halls together- all three of us for a while. I used to stay the night with his sister and he (come to find out later) had a crush on me the whole time. I tryed to set him up with my sister once also. Funny how life plays with you like that, huh? Just thought I'd share the story one more time; maybe the names may remind someone of who I am! I'd like to find my old friend Sharon Kennedy, she had a sister & also a brother Bubba- who passed away in a car accident there. If anyone knows the name please e-mail me. I live in Bullhead City, AZ. as of May, 2001. I've been living in Tacoma, WA for the past seven years before now & learned to play guitar there. I have an 8 yr old son as of June 9th. I'm single and still looking for prince charming. If ya think ya remember me- email me! I can't wait to here from someone!

For most of my time at Wildflecken, I was company clerk for A Company 2nd/15th and lived in the little town of Romershag. The years 1968 to 1970 were a very busy time at Wildflecken, and even though I was a draftee and not happy that I had to be in the Army at all, I have to admit that there were some good and enjoyable things that happened during my time on The Hill... In June 2000, I returned to Germany for the first time and visited the base in Wildflecken. It's more like a ghost town now and the US Army isn't there any more, but it was nice to see it again and remember some of the good people that I met there.

All, As some of you may know I have been researching my grandmother's family the Kleinheinz from Wildflecken. I was stationed in Germany from 1996-1999. I worked in Schweinfurt, and lived right down the autobahn in Bad Kissingen. Only problem is that I found out right AFTER I left Germany that my grandmother's family came from Wildflecken! I trained there several times when I wasn't in Bosnia, and wish I could get back! I found out a Bruno Kleinheinz was mayor of Wildflecken after the war. I wonder if this Bruno Kleinheinz is related to the Bruno Kleinheinz living in Wildflecken today? Trying to figure out if/how we might be related. Thanks for any help, Sean L.

Scott Salpholm, Tiffany Turnbull, Steve Luce, Mike Rangel (bartender @ NCO Club) and Barbara Ramos. If anyone knows where to find any of these people, please let me know.

Hi all you 'Rock Dwellers'!
Iwas on the Rock working at the Ammo supply Point at the 'top of the hill going into the major part of the training area. I would like to contact anyone that was there at the time especially guys from the 60th Ord Ammo (ASP#3). I don't know how many are still alive as the old clock keeps ticking.
Bernie Keawa, Bill Neidig, Tom Price, and so many others.yet it seems like just yesterday. People still don't believe the weather 'up there', as I've dissribed it to them.Is Clayton Tucker still out there somewhere??
Thank you to all who maintain this site, as it is a great coonection for so many ex G.I.s

I have just discovered this web-site, and am very moved by the kindness of the people who run it. My parents were prisoners here
during the war, and have left behind two children buried here.We
have pictures, which I have sent on to Heinz, and hopefully others
will be forthcoming, to show what went on here before the U.S. took
over. I think this site would make a good museum.

In 82, I was in the 3rd grade and I left at the end of 7th in June of
87. Kevin Trujillo, Tina Troy, Gina Sifuentes, and a anyone else that
I can share memories with. It was a wonderful place to be a kid, and
Wildflecken holds a very special and tender place in my heart. It
always will. Thanks, and hello to everyone!

I remember snow so high we couldn't get off "the Hill" and chow was flown in on choppers, great friends, even better scenary, and a feeling we may have been doing something important during those tense years. Life expectancy on the missile site was about eleven seconds if the balloon went up and many a night we watched the fighters come out of East Germany to test us and see if we were alert. We were......

I am amazed that so many service personnel and their dependents are compelled to write in and contribute to this site and how emotional the memories of those times are. There is something special about Wildflecken and no matter what changes have taken place and what changes may be in store for the post it will always be 1966 to me.

I served with some great people and would like to hear from anyone who was in B Battery during the same time period.

It was good to scroll through the picutres of the rock. I remember the good times and the long hours of keeping the Hawk ready. Seeing the planes chase each other over the border. Freezing my butt off at B BTRY working on those radar. Also remember all the friends I made. I got there in the spring of 81 just in time for German-American week. That set the pace for the rest of my stay in Wildflecken. anybody out there that remembers drop me a line.

At Wildflecken for training, 1966. We road-marched all the way from Augsburg and my vehicle broke down right as we arrived. Spent hours in sub-cold changing a sprocket. What could possibly top that?
I remember the coal stoves in the barracks, too, and how difficult they were to keep going and how much fun it was shoveling coal and hauling it around in buckets. The pictures on the website look just like I remember it. Anybody from the 1/34 Inf (1966-69)out there?

I then went to seminary, and now am the priest-in-charge of St. Stephen's Church in Clifton Forge VA.

I remember the walks over to the monastery on the hill below the Kreuzberg. Good beer! The medics all used to hang out at the Stadt Cafe in town. Remember the train ride down to Gemunden.

Stationed at the "Rock" from 89-92. I have been back 3 times as a tourist to visit, including this last December. I was disapointed to see I could no longer go on post to visit and remember. I really hated the post at the time but I have come to love Wildflecken and the Rhon. Many a beer I drank at the Kreuzberg. I was back this last December and the beer is still fantastic. What is it about the area that we all love and miss? I think that because it was a difficult and isolated duty that it made you appreciate it a little more.
There was a book written about Wildflecken by a female US Officer who commanded the post just after WWII. The post was a Jewish resetelment center at the time. Does anybody know the name of this book? I think it was simply called "The Rock", but I can't seem to find it again.
I would love to hear from others stationed there from 89-92. Especially looking for Mark Richardson, Sgt Pinero, Sgt Zuber, PFC Carrol, and anyone else.

The 'rock' was one miserable place when I got there, but I got to
like the place and people.
I visited Europe 2 summers ago, I decided to see the 'hill', strange
seeing no gates ,but the place is still very familiar but appears
even better. (probably because I have 'wheels')
I see some famillar names on this log and say Hi to people who

Was just feeling melancholy and started searching the net for Wildflecken. Didn’t expect to find much…but I did. Nice job on this site.

I was an Army brat with pops stationed at WTA during 1982-85. I was high school age, the perfect time to experience Deutschland. We actually lived off post in Oberwildflecken.

I saw the name of my best bud at the time, Robbie Doss, in this guestbook. Sent him and email, hopefully the address is still good.

Two pals of mine that were German citizens and liven in Oberwildflecken also, were Patrick Priest and Thilo (sorry tick-turd, I’ve forgotten your last name). Curious to know what those two might be up to these days. Ah, good memories…what I wouldn’t give to be a teen again in Wildflecken, Germany…good times, damn good times.

My comments about wildflecken is that this installation create real men. I will never forget my good friends like SGT Richardson, CPL Carpenter and the unforgettable driver Tankersley(Tank). I had good times and bad times with these guys but I miss them a lot. Also I will never forget the guard duty at the BLSA and the alert call to move ours APCs to the LDA. It was a real hard task. Another thing unforgettable is the beer made by the monks at the monastery(kreuzberg)

Served as bn S3 till June 84. then got "promoted" to 8th ID HQ, Bad Kreuznach. Didn't want to leave Wildfecken but went anyway. Missed the place as soon as I left. Remember a lot of field time, working like crazy - little time to ever get caught up, Reforgers, second hand vehicles that were never quite right, rail loading, alerts. Retired now (from Army anyway). Times there could be exhausting, but never bad. My wife & I loved Wildflecken and will make it back sooner or later. Names I remember...to name but a few....Long, Allen, Maskevitch, Morris, Kearney, Kuiper, Dean, LeNieve, Spivey, Solomon, Troy, McGuffy, Appling, Augeri, Manzi, Jenks, Hurd, Niekov, Connelly, Greene, Hollingsworth. Remember the RATT rig and commo and generator mechs in the snow. Trying to recover people and equipment after field exercises. I think this website is superb and my thanks to the guy that put it together. I'm glad so many took a part of the place with them in their hearts when they left. God Bless.

Was in the U.S. Army in Schweinfurt from 1996-1999. Went to Wildflecken several times during that period when I wasn't in Bosnia or Macedonia! Found out AFTER I left Germany that my grandmother's family left Wildflecken for Wisconsin in 1872. Trying to get in touch with ANY of the 22 or more Kleinheinz left in Wildflecken today. Albin, Agnes, and Bruno Kleinheinz just to name a few. My great, great grandfather Lorenz Heinrich Kleinheinz brought the family to Wisconsin along with his father Johann. Trying to see if Andreas, Antonia, or Maria Barbara Kleinheinz may be my key to establishing a link to one or more of the Kleinheinz left in Wildflecken today. Sean

Hi, there everyone, wherever in the world now!
Greetings from Japan, where I spent the last 10 years and will probably live for the rest of my life. Pretty good and interesting information you got there. Even found three people from the good ol' times on the rock.

Tell you, I quite often think of WTA and my good 7th ATC. My TDY's to Grafenwoehr, the many meetings we had with local Government Officials and so on concerning the firing noise, the "led in the tree" forest official from Gersfeld, my old buddies.... and so much more. Not to forget my almost 5 years at the MP station. The countless nights, playing chess, wild goose chases, typings (or not) my great boss "de Mr. Ruhmer", "de instigator SGT Barnes", de Paul Reynolds (always out for something!!!) and, and, and....

Anyway, if anybody wants to get in touc with me either e-mail or snail-mail, go ahead,

I was an administrative specialist at headquarters working officers records, Co. A, records management and marriage clerk. Really enjoyed my work. Visited relatives in many villages of same name that were cousins. We had some really wild times and had many good friends. Fazio,Calio, Fedorick, Bugle, from McKees Rock, PA. if you read this give me a call at 8l2-482-757l. I was amazed to find the old hill on the web. It wasn't called the rock back then. The experience that set the course of my life was life on the hill with my good job(which others might have envied) and the opportunity to see the world in a broader perspective. I have many photos in my album, really fond memories. God Bless all who have ever served in this unique place on the earth. I can see in my mind all those who I knew by name or by face. So many years have passed, but the memories are still very sharp. Thank you so much for having this historical webpage. S. E. "Bud" Durcholz

I only visited the "Wild Chicken" once, in the dead of winter in January 1981. The snow was about 3-4 feet deep. My CO's driver ran his jeep off the road on the ice and wrecked it, so the CO "requisitioned" my jeep. It was a different place for tankers, who were used to the ranges at Graf. All we could do at Wildflecken was park on the crest of one hill, and shoot across the deep valley in between at the targets on the next hill across the way. But we got some good training in. Also did lots of range time with M203s and sub-caliber LAWs (little rocket with a puff of smoke marking charge as the warhead).

I hope to visit Wildflecken again soon, as I live right down the road - working for the US Army in Schweinfurt.

I'll never forget the Hill, 31 months was a long time. I met a lot of good people there form all over the world and most of them could'nt wait to get back. I did'nt realize it at the time but I learned a lot there, mostly about people. Most of us showed up by ourselves, not really knowing what to expect. We were all alike, looking out for each other and trying hard not to get lost in a world set apart from what most of were used to. When I finally got back I was in culture shock I went the Univ of Mass with 26 thousand other students only I was at a great advantage, I had the GI bill and the experience of the Hill, something that made me appreciate and finally get thru college with a degree. At the time I was there we had a lot of good times, we stuck together wether it was the partying or the hard work we did on MTA, the bivouacs and training, the cold weather and short summers. But I would'nt have reccommended it to any recruit, but as I look back, the experience although trying taught me a lot. I am grateful to all those with me that helped me thru it. Thanks. I hope to hear from someone that remembers what it was like. I really appreciate a good friend of mine, Dennis Holcomb who told me about this site and helped me thru the experience of the hill. Take care God Bless and good luck.

Can Do. Top of the Rock. Scouts Out.
Memories flood back, Alerts, guard duty, The Battalion Runs, German beer and chicken bought instead of eating at the mess hall, the Rod and Gun club. Field exercises, training with the French army, on Parade in Mulhousen France, The Rec. center tours of Europe, but most of all the men and women i met during those years. I grew up then, nothing in my life now or ever can compare, it wasn't always good but then what is.
A few people i remember, The men of 3rd Platoon, Charlie company, and Scout Platoon. LTC. Beal, Lt. Turner, SSgt. Steel, SFC. Angulo,

I want to talk about some of the more disturbing memories from my time in "Flecken". I was 17 yrs. old when I arrived. Race relations were bad they talked of recent riots and fights downtown. You had the white bars and the black bars. Everyone pretty much kept to their own. There were a few rebels who refused to go along. Most of the "cruits" said forget that crazy stuff , but there were others who got right in the middle of the foolishness. I was one of them until I met Marlon Lewis. He taught me to think for myself. Be pro-black but not anti-white.
We drank much and drugged even more! It was what we did! We worked hard and we played even harder! We ( Lewis & I) never went to the field without our hash, vodka and beer! And I still made Soldier of the Quarter! I attended Race Relations School in Bremerhaven. I was assigned to Post HQ under SSGT Joe Waddell until I got drunk and missed a clas I was to teach. Then I was sent back to my old unit , 2 months later I was before the E-5 board (which I maxxed). The Hill was truly a learning experience.
I credit it for much of what I am today. I have great respect for my fellows ( all races). I love the Lord with all my heart. I carry the same spirit I got on "The Hill" in my ministry. Today I pastor a church in Ohio. Iam 43 now . Older and wiser because of "The Hill" and people who served there!

I arrived by the trolley with 3 guys assigned to 54th EN Bn, early on a November morning, in soggy snow. The battalion was in Hohenfels and there was noone there to meet us. Noone seemed to care, and I remember feeling real lost, without any language skills. It never seemed to get better in the 2-15 IN. 2-15 was a pretty sorry unit then, but there were some pretty good people in it.
I was initially assigned to the ground surveillance radar section as a TPS-33 team chief, with frequent trips to Hof for border duty. Then moved on to become the air-ground ops sergeant in the battalion S-3 shop when my predecessor became the NCO club manager. Remember TPIs? Remember the way the guys in the Davy Crocket platoon absolutely revoltin'?
I didn't get to stay a full tour - almost all the ops/intel/training NCOs and radarmen were curtailed and sent to RVN for fun & games.
In reading the previous entries, it is interesting to note how consistent our impressions of the Rock are. I had a tour in Alaska where the temps were lots colder, but I've never been as cold as in 'Flecken and Hohenfels.
One thing that I remember best was "hauling ass to the messhall after coming in from the field to get pieces of fuit and veggie crates to start a fire in our coal stoves. HOWCUM the engineers had oil fired heat?
Someone commented about race relations problems ... They were there in '64, '65, and 66 too. Blacks and whites didn't/couldn't hang out together offpost, and some of that spilled over to life on the hill. Noone had a clue then either.
I haven't seen many Can Doers since that time. I saw SFC Albert (the PAC NCO) in RVN, SP5 Quentin Walker (from the GS Radar platoon)arrived at Fort Benning just after me and we both went to RVN as scout dog handlers. I've periodically seen the battalion XO, MAJ (then) Griffiths, now retired (as an LTC) here in Columbus, and 1LT (now LTC retired) Al Stewart who had the scout platoon for a while.
While I remember duty at Wildflecken as the worst in my career, the most vivid memories I have of "flecken are those beautiful crisp sunlit days in mid-winter just after a snow fall. No place was ever prettier. The summer (that week) was nice too!
I remember the NCO club (though a mist) too. Good bands, food and entertainment, but no parking to speak of, therefore a hike thru some pretty deep snow. No problems unless there were visitors from the BAOR, Mainz or Berlin ... then lots of fights at the EM and NCO clubs. Thank God our post MPs werte usually on our side.
I truely regret that my tour was not completed. There are so many people I never got to know, places I didn't see, and things I didn't get to learn.
