It seems like John Koltes left lasting impressions on anyone he worked with. If I remember correctly, he was a "bear of a man" that
was tough but fair.
I arrived in Wildflecken late Jan. 1970 was was immediately taken "downtown" to the Würzburger Hof. About a week later I was
spinning records with "Sonny" there. I also worked off base
later in Premich for a short time as DJ.
On "The Hill, I was just another crane operator in John Koltes platoon. But boy could he throw a party!! Never forget getting
totally wiped out and having him throw me againt the wall of the house he was renting and how some of the guys were chasing the cows
in the nearby fields.
Yes, Wildflecken brings back memories.
I Left The Hill in Oct. 1971 and was transferred to Brigade Hq in Hanau.
I would be pleased to hear from anyone.

I am especially trying to contact my best friend at the time Dennis Brockel. I believe his parents names were Dale and Althea Boss, and he had two sisters, Theresa and Bobby Jo. One of my more enjoyable tours. The local residents took excellent care of me, lodging and great meals. The monestary was my second home, next to the "Mickey Mouse Club" in greater downtown Wildflecken. The Mouse Burgers were superior. Arnberg was a great hideaway. Looked forwarded for the French Artillery to arrive for their firing sessions. The first truck in their convoy was the wine wagon. They did have problems firing the 76mm How. Why leave the hill in the winter ? The skiing was great.
To add to our entertainment, we used to share smokes with our pals on the other side of the border (the farmers). That was East of Wasser Kupper. My house guest this week is a fellow from Oaklahoma City who also served a shorter period than I. He has visited our friends in Bad Bruckenau since leaving. I would jump at the opportunity to return for a visit. Always wondered whether any of our employees from Latvia and Estonia stayed or moved on to other countries. BTW, the book "The Wild Place" is still in circulation.
Guten Tag to alles !

1st Infantry Division's "Task Force 28" (1st Battle Group, 28th Infantry [reinforced]), commanded by Colonel Joffrey Boston, flew non-stop from Topeka, Kansas to Rein-Main in January, 1963. After maneuvering in 3 feet of snow for two weeks we arrived in Wildflecken where we trained for about three months before motor marching to the Cold War's front line to augment Berlin Brigade. 1/28th Inf. was reinforced by A Battery (105 mm), 2nd Howitzer Battalion, 33rd Artillery, 444th Transportation Company (Light Truck), & other Big Red One units. Wildflecken was good field training in the cold, snow, and mud. There was also a good EM club on the hill.

Hi,

Hi All,

Was at the Wildflecken Military hospital sometime around 1949-1950. The American Military put me back together again after I survived a gas stove explosion as a small child in Schweinfurt. Don't remember much about anybody in particular except that the medical personnel and others at the hospital really had a lot of faith in me, that someone there loved opera music, and that there were fancy dances. I kind of remember a lot of grey cold bone-chilling fog?

My eternal gratitude to all who were there at the time.
If anybody was there at that time and might remember me or my case please contact me. It would be wonderful to hear from you.

Thank you

Maria Mackey

Just been reading some of these messages, and it sure brought back memories of my time working at the medical dispensary. My then husband was with the 709th MP's. I remember Dr. Carlson, Slifkin,Hegstrom,Fightlin, all a great bunch of guys. It was a great place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there! Still, I would like to go back for a visit someday. If anybody remembers me, please e-mail me. I'm still a nurse - too many years!

To the best of my knowledge, he still lives in Fulda, Germany. Any help that can be provided (address, E Mail address, etc..) is appreciated. I am still in touch with Dave Schroeder from the Heavy Equipment section and have seen Vic Nahlic a couple times since we left Germany. Had some great times when I was there, didn't realize how much I would grow to miss the place.

Good afternoon. I was in the 564th MP Co and then the MPI Section while I was in wildflecken. My wife Mary worked at the Theater and at the thrift store. We lived on Helmut Patske Str., directly behind the theater so going to work took about 115 steps and a couple of sips of coffee. We too hated the place at first but then grew to love it. I especially like the memory of spending two years on the hill thinking we were snowed in and found out that the bottom of the hill (Wildflecken village)were enjoying sun and fun !!

Standortverwaltung Wildflecken

Comment

Hallo.

I was there too,my name is Duncan Clements, I dont know if we ever crossed paths but Im sure somewhere along the way we did. I was part of the cohort platoon that came in feb. 87 and was split up between
D and B co's. I had a great time there and almost extended. Looking for any fellow cohorts or freinds From WTA. Missed he wall comming down and Desert storm. I would Be curios to know what the 54th was up to from 90-94. If you want to talk about the good old days or bad old days (there were plenty of both as I recall) feel free to drop me a line. If you visit my wed page Please sign my guest book, It might motivate me to write about the two week hands across WTA and getting hit sqare in the chest by a deer hiding in the bushes or the wild boars that had chased some guys to the top of there ammo pile that they were guarding. How about range road, or being he range cadre for a bunch of remf's that couldnt hit S__t.
Anyway to much to list now, I'm glad I picked a combat M.O.S it was certainly more interesting than alot of other jobs in the army, there were alot of crappy times too but the guys I served with kept it tolerable. Looking for Trotter, Liggett, Wolf, Lt. Gleason, Dugan,
Tetreault, Cundiff, Kruzic, Bryant, SGT.Lester, Donato, Cahill, Palmer, Elbrecht, Harriss, Noble, Mutt Man, Schultz,

Hi all. Looking for anyone in the 54th around 86-89. I truly had some of the greatest times at what most people thought was a sap assignment. I still want to return to Wildchicken one day, just to see a part of the three years of history. I'd also like to see the open border. I too stuck my body past those pvc pipes, where the East German guards could shoot at you. Guess I was a little reckless. Man, we were all so tight and there were a lot of good folks, both on the installation and the local German population. Anyone in the 54th, or HHC, or especially commo, shoot me an email please. Thanks - Ted

I try and sign the book every once in a while to see if anybody remembers me and would drop me a note. I am still looking for a lot of people that I used to know, loved to talk to, hung out with, and miss some of them dearly. It would be nice just to know what everybody has been up to. I lived accross the Green Goose in the duplex of the Restaurant that was owned by a lady name "Buzinka", had Siberian Huskies and always love to stay busy. I am going back in December of this year to visit and I cannot wait to see what things look like now. I hope it will not make me cry :). I wish everyone of you that I have met in the past the very best and hope I was not mean to you... God bless!

I loved and missed the very good friends and good times I had there in Wildflicken Germany. I met my wife in (Regina)who is German in August 1981. We were married in April 1981, and still married today. I retired from the US Army in Feb 2000 as a 1SG/E8 in the Infantry. I would love to hear from anyone who was assigned to the 2-15 INF in wildflicken during this same period of time. I especially missed people such as my room mate SP4 McGee, SP4 White, and SP4 Craighead from the Support PLT. SP4, Freney, and SP4 White from the Commo PLT.
LTC. Beal, whos has passed away was the Battalion Commander, he use to run the hell out of us.

I froze my butt off many days and night out in the field pulling guard duty, but for me, and my 22 yrs., of Army service Wildflicken was by far my best assignment, I didn't know that when I first arrive there from Detroit Michigan. It snowed more there on that post than any assignment I had. I miss you guys you were true friends and we were a good unit, who trained hard and partied hard. We were thre "Top of the Rock" battalion

I was transferred from the 814 Engineer Company in Hanau to Wildflecken in 1971 and I finished up my tour of duty there, till I was discharged and went home in 1972. Its been so long that most of the names escape me but I remember the Platoon Sergeant's name was John Koltees, some of the guys in my platoon were Al Puckel,Robin Breadwell, SP/4 Medina,SP/4 Buzzard, Bobby Poindexter,Ellis Cora, the rest of the names are now lost to time. The thing that stands out the most was how so very cold it was there!!!! If you remember me or any of the boys from the HHC Company, drop me a line.

Hi to you all. I signed in once before about a year or so back. At the time I wrote how I didn't see much about the 54th ENGRS. But now after reading all the messages I see they were a big part off the Hill for quite some time. I also noticed that someone was looking for information about "Kathryn Hulme" who wrote the book "The Wild Place".
You can go to www.bn.com and list her name in the search section and you will find the book listed for $52.50.
This is truely a great site and I thank all those involved with keeping it going. I got in contact with one of the guys I served with after I listed my message on this site. About 8 or 10 months later he drops me a line and says "Hey, I think we served together and went on leave to Holland". Oh I remember it well. Take care all you Veterans. Thank you and God Bless you one and all.

I spent so much time at the Top of the Rock, it should have been my PDA.

I was station at aschaffenburg (4/64) 71-73 and werthiem (3/35) 74-77.

In the summer of 72 I spent 5 weeks living out of a tent during Scout Squad Qualifications. I have a memory of a cadilac sticking on a 20 mm and watching a m 114 go vertical while cooking off a 1000 rd belt.

In the winter of 76 I have a great memory of JD Dunlap straking the NCO wearing nothing but a pile cap.

I have enjoyed this site.

Thanks so much!

Really had a great experience at the Rock, my first duty station. I volunteered to go up there from Mainz. I extended for a extra year to stay. So many nice people and beautiful places. I'll never forget the first time I opened the barracks window and the clouds rolled in. We were mechanics, fire control specialist and armors supporting 1/68 armor and 108 MI. Going to hoesfeld and graf with those guys was great. I'll always remember that time in my life. 45and45days in the field. We were young and part of the end of a great barrier. That nasty wall coming down. I remember the flood of people walking threw the streets and on the roads to get to the west. This is a nice site and has brought back alot of memories some good some bad,but all a learning experience. Some day I will take my sons back to the Rock. All hail the GREEN GOOSE! thanks Rick

Greetings All!

I was at Wildflecken from 85-87 with B 3/52. Any other 16E out there remember freezing our a$$es off on guard duty around the tac-site? It seems like we were on alert constantly. How about sledding down the hills on site using a radome cover from the HPIR? my ass still hurts from some of those landings. Anybody remember the "guard geese"? And how about the 6 months it took to build their little houses and swimming pools.....

I'd like to hear from anybody who was there when I was. Looking specifically for Vince Hayes, Eric Noel, Chuck Jennings, Russell Kyle, Marc Hauer, Rod Preston, Salinger, Glen Mahood or hell, anybody from Bravo Battery for that matter.

Don't remember any names from my group, maybe someone can jog my memory. Do have pictures when we won second place in the MISPIC in 1968. All the Inf. units were in Nam. so we were sent to take the test.

Hey Rick and everyone possibly interested in a reunion!
I didn't plan the last reunion and have no idea as to what all I would need to do to plan/coordinate one, but I have posted a forum on the http://wildfleckenchickens.tripod.com site for everyone to put their ideas up on to maybe get one together.

It would be neat to have one in Wildflecken, but accomodations, etc. would be needed. Inexpensive rooms are avail. at the Kreuzberg ($15/night), but of course there is airfare. One could be set up stateside...anyway, let's all put our heads together and see what we can come up...all you planners out there, bring your expertise!

Please if anyone has info on this, post it here so we all can know about it, and maybe attend!

Who organized the last one, and where was it held??

I have written here previously and have been so happy to see this site here. I thought perhaps it would also be nice to have a site for all of us to post our own photos and share our own memories of Germany and the post, so I am in the process (far from complete) of putting together a site to do just that. It is listed above and is at http://wildfleckenchickens.tripod.com.

I hope many of you will visit, contribute your memories, photos and even recipes and lots of other neat things. I have a bunch of ideas about what we can share.

Let's keep our German-American friendship strong! Look forward to seeing you!

This is my annual sign-in! I am so happy to see the site is alive and well - as a matter of fact, it seems more alive than ever before...Just proves my theory that Wildflecken was truly magical for many of us. 2003 was really spectacular for me in as much as so many old WFL friends and theatre volunteers and ex-employees found me! I have been signing into this site since 1993 and at no time have so many folks contacted me as last year.. Hummm what's going on here? A major case of nostalgia!

when I read the many , many comments from young and old posted on this site - it confirms my feelings that WFL was not only very magical to most of the people who ended up there over all the years it was in operation, but that it has some strange hold over all of us. I have served in many places the world over, some much more accomodation weather wise and metroplitan wise than the little place on the rock - but I have MEVER read such wonderfful accounts of the times and friendships formed here. I love the really old entries.. from guys and gals who remember the Army when it was truly great and I love the entries recounting incidents and stories.. Some of you ought to write - they are that good.. some make me laugh, some make me cry.. All are wonderful!

So here I am, it's 2004, I am still in Germany, Still with William and the 3 cats, still happy (but ready to retire) and still wishing somehow we could all go back...

Get in touch if you remember me and the the theatre and the Recreational events we hosted!

Worked the border during the time the fence went up. They used crude tools and wheel barrows working at night . gone by daylight and absent all the day light hours. We worked night duty, going in under the cover of darkness and out before light. We worked a sector from fulda about 15 miles south on several sites. shot at several times but really was stray fire coming after an animal or something tripped a flare. Did come close to capture twice as they wanted our radar equipment. They were clever in finding us in the night. We were airlifted out once from being snowbound and they were just over the hill from us at the time. The last time, they came up from our rear at about two in the morning and tripped out noise makers in the wire. We fled in the duce and a half and two jeeps quickly. the guys in the rear of the truck had to kick them out as we drove off in a rush. Too close for comfort. So many stories to tell in a short note. Learned a lot, grew up fast and froze my butt off. Good for the soul...............but don't recommend it.
Did return in 1991 and the closing of the base in 1994. Sat in the reviewing stand with the basr commander for the event. would not take anything for the experience and would not care to do it again. Having to thaw out your toothbrush to calen your teeth and try to eat an apple that frozen solid is not a way to live.....................

It's a shame we were only there for training during Brigade 76- less than a six month deployment, so we were not allowed to do anything that would have made it more memorable-like leave base.
Sorry we made such a bad scene at the NCO club that night! We were across the corner from the MPs and a few guys (maybe fifty ?) gathered outside the barracks. It was getting a little boring, so somebody said lets go to the NCO club! There were enough of us to form up and march, but it was more of a mob. Got a little interesting and the MPs helped us find our way back home. I got stuck on cleanup and they made us wait most of the day before releasing us to ride to Hoenfels in open five-tons, in the rain.

Actually, I enjoyed it there. I learned to develop and print black and white film. They had the best photo lab I found in the army. I married a German girl I met in Weisbaden and have a great daughter from her (we divorced, I kept our daughter). I remember riding in a bus on the way to Weisbaden one day quite routine, and realizing "I'm in GERMANY!"

It was a great place, and I could get around easier in Germany than I can in Dallas using the bus/rail system! Anyone from 1/18th out there drop me a line. Check out my efforts on a friend's Custom L-29 jet page at www.flyajet.org
All the best,
Dan

I remember the cobblestone road up the hill and thinking I was gonna get to live in a fortress dungeon for 3 years. Hate the constant rain and clouds - no where else on earth could a cloud sit on top of a hill and be sunny and nice everywhere else. Miss it tho - kinds strange how it grew on me. Lived on "C" street. Remember when they built an addition onto the grade school - me and a pal spray-painted it inside all over. LOL - being a punk army brat. Oh well - same sentiment here - never expected in a million years to find a site ten + years later for the place...cool to see all the comments.

BTW - we called it "Wild-Chicken"...

I was very young when i was in Wildflecken, but i remember it like it so clearly. My father, George Toney, served there when i was there. I remember the range and seeing the tanks. He took me to search for duds, and even let me keep one. I remember when the wall fell and even got a piece of it. The land was beautiful and the soldiers were great. I had the time of my life and plan to visit again soon. If you served with my father and would like info on how to contact him, email me. Im sure he would love to hear from you.

I spent close to 33 Months on the Rock. And between 7 and 9 Months a year in the bush. At 60 I look back and I wouldn't trade it for anything. I really and truely miss it. And I miss all of you. I hope to be back one day.

The site looks outstanding. I like it very much. Keep up the good work, together we can keep Wildflecken alive.

I rember the cold most of all.(who could forget it.)I drove an m-113 until I got to promoted to sgt. all in all, it was a good experence.

Dear friends of wildflecken, the Wildflecken post-museum was completely rebuild during the past weeks. Visit it now online at the "Rhoenkaserne"-part (press button "museum" there) of comrades.de.
Have fun :-)
